Critters is an on-line workshop/critique group for serious Science Fiction / Fantasy / Horror writers. What that means is a bunch of writers get together, read each others' stories, and tell the authors how they felt reading their stories. The ultimate goal of Critters is to help writers improve, not only by having their work dissected by other members, but also by learning to dissect their own work (by, of course, dissecting others).

Other Worlds Writers' Workshop
For beginning to advanced writers. A place where serious writers of speculative fiction can polish their skills and learn from each other. Works posted here range from short-shorts to full-length series, from first drafts to finished works in final polishing.
Writers are invited to join based on their love of and understanding of the requirements of good speculative fiction. Programs are geared to varying skill levels (see Workshops). Professional writers are not only welcome but especially invited to join and share in the benefits of a workshop tailored to the needs of the speculative genres.
If you have ever read a published work and found yourself mentally screaming "Show, not tell!" or looked at your own writing after the fact and thought, "Did I really say that? Argh!" this may be the place for you.
Writers will find here:
- Worldbuilding: discussions and critiques aimed at improving the background setting of your story.
- Line edits: for those who want to put the final gloss on the manuscript before it goes to the editor.
- Story analysis: if your characters are hopeless or your plot has canyons instead of potholes, here is the place to fix them and save some editor the price of a rejection notice.
- Technical help: do your sword fights need help? You can't find a plausible way to disguise a seven-foot alien as human? Throw out your question and let your fellow members help.
- Chat: discussion and talk lists related to the care and feeding of speculative fiction, tips for getting published, working with editors, and other craft-related issues.
- Bookstore: through the Other Worlds Bookstore, you can pick up references for just about anything you need to help build your worlds, from how to write to how middle-tech fantasy types get bread on the table or steel on their hips.
- Links: to agents and other helpful sites.
Above all, you will find other writers who both read and write speculative fiction, and can critique your work with an eye to the needs of the genre.
An extensive listing of online and traditional writing workshops for practically all genres.
Rom-Critters is a free private online writing and critiquing forum for writers who are actively and seriously pursuing a career in romance writing, no matter what romance subgenre -- contemporary, historical, paranormal, futuristic, etc. Whether you are writing for epubs or traditional print publication, Rom-Critters can help you learn, develop, and perfect your prose, while making friends. The group accepts new members on a quarterly basis. However, they have a "pending" loop, so potential members can get to know each other, ask questions, and see if Rom-Critters is the place for them while they wait.
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Workshop
- Science Fiction and Fantasy Workshop (SF&FW) was established in 1980 to provide workshop experience through the mail, and to put writers in contact with others in the same situation. There are two ways you can benefit from SF&FW: one is to subscribe to the monthly newsletter ($15/year) and the other is to pay an additional one-time membership fee ($5) to join the workshop. This is not a business. It's more like a club for new and aspiring writers who need and want the support other people in a similar position can give. The membership (400-plus now) ranges from beginners who have never written to people who sell almost everything they write.
- SPEC: An E-mail Screenwriting Workshop
- The SPEC Screenwriting Workshop was formed in 1997 as an online forum for screenwriters to submit their material for peer review. As the name implies, SPEC is a workshop. It is not an electronic publisher nor a marketplace to buy/sell manuscripts. Members use the private forum only to discuss, critique, and post screenplays.
Viable Paradise Science Fiction Writers' Workshop
A one-week intensive immersion in the art and craft of science fiction. Held annually on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. Classes are small, intense, and feature one-on-one and group interaction with the instructors. The instructors are best-selling and award-winning authors and professional editors all currently working in the field.
