Writers Guild of America, west Intellectual Property Registry

Available Online. Founded in 1927, the Writers Guild of America, west (WGAw) Intellectual Property Registry is now available online and has expanded the types of intellectual property it will accept for registration.

Screen and television writers, authors, poets, playwrights, journalists, composers, lyricists, graphic and visual artists, computer programmers, architects, researchers, photographers, thesis authors and others may safeguard their intellectual property by documenting the date of completion through the guild's service.

Anyone who wishes to register intellectual property may do so as long as the material is provided either on 8 x 11 paper or online. The online service provides the same benefits and security as the guild's on-site or mail-in registration service.

The guild's registry, now registering over 40,000 deposits annually, has become an essential and customary element in the entertainment industry. Writers and creators who seek to assert their intellectual property rights use the service to create evidence of authorship on a specific date prior to circulating the material for the purpose of sale.

Online registrations are effective immediately and cannot be changed once submitted. Registrants may also wish to register subsequent drafts of the same material if significant additions or changes have been made to the storyline or material. The registry service produces the material as evidence in legal or guild proceedings.

The Intellectual Property Registry does not compare registered material to previously registered material, provide any statutory protections, give legal advice, or provide copyright protections.

The service will not release any information regarding a registration to anyone but the registrant/s, a court of law or the guild. The registry is a neutral third party that solely provides evidence relating to the chain of custody of registered material once it has been deposited with the guild.
